From a beloved reader:
I thought I'd weigh in on the latest installment in the cupcake wars by telling you the results of a taste test.
I work near Buttercup Bake Shop and live near the new Little Cupcake Bake Shop in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Five co-workers and I did a taste comparison. One day I brought in cupcakes from Bay Ridge, the next day a co-worker brought in Buttercup, so the cupcakes were not eaten side by side. Still, there were clearly some differences.
The 6-0 vote was in favor of the Little Cupcake Bake Shop. Their cake is moister, less crumbly and has a slightly milder flavor, which allows the buttery goodness of the icing to really shine. The Buttercup cake flavor tended to compete too much with the icing. We also found the Little Cupcake icing to be softer and richer. Of course, none of us would turn our noses up at a Buttercup cupcake.
Oh, and as for the lawsuit, it seems pretty silly to me. I can attest to the fact that the two bake shops are separated by an hour's subway ride (on a good day) so it's not like they're competing for the same customers, except for the rare person like me, who has easy access to both places. And I'll be patronizing both depending on where I am when a craving strikes.
