Lemon Cupcake @ Babycakes

Lemon Cupcake @ Babycakes
Originally uploaded by candiedyams.

As promised, I stopped by Babycakes on Broome Street on Saturday afternoon. This new arrival to the cupcake community is unique because they serve sugar free, gluten free organic cupcakes. I talked to the owner, Erin McKenna, and she told me about spelt. Spelt is an Asian wheat that she uses in some of her cupcakes. Babycakes cupcakes are kinda pricey at $3.25 for a small. (See picture above) I enjoyed the lemon cupcake with ginger lemonade. In fact, I could have had a frosting shot for a buck, but I was feeling so healthy after eating the cupacake that I didn't want to ruin it.

The website is http://babycakesnyc.com, and I am not well versed with the spelt and the gluten free stuff, but the cupcake was moist so it's a good but pricy alternative to traditional sugary cupcakes

That's me in the green skirt! I am a huge fan of your blog. If I knew that was you I would have said hi.
In response to hk, Erin makes both gluten free and spelt cupcakes. I had the gluten free carrot, vanilla and lemon. All were delicious.

I have recently tried the cupcakes there, and let me tell you, this is now my ultimate favorite!!! Not only are they DELICIOUS, but totally sugar free!!! I cannot go a day without one!!! Erin, the owner is a sweetheart and from now on this is the only place in the city where i'm getting my cupcakes... They are soooooo much better than Magnolia's!!!!!I'm never going there again...
Go there ASAP!! I guarantee you'll love this new bakery!!!!

Spelt does have a small amount of gluten, but Erin makes cupcakes with zero gluten as well.

i live around the corner from this bakery... what a blessing,
i don't have any allergies at all but i'm so addicted to the gluten free chocolate cupcakes with the vanilla icing that i'd swear they have crack in them!!!!

Babycakes doesn't have separate equipment (mixers, ovens, etc.) for their products that are made from gluten-free ingredients thus NONE of their products are truly 100% gluten-free because of this cross-contamination. Their recipes are good but it's too bad they're not safe for celiacs or for people, like myself, who are gluten intolerant.

that last comment isn't 100% true. i asked and actually they have separate baking pans, bowls, mixing stuff and even separate sinks for gluten-free and spelt stuff.
