Cupcakes for a Cause is this week!

Cupcakes for a Cause is a fabulous annual event involving charity and cupcakes! This year it's running from October 15th-21st. Visit their site to send a really cool virtual cupcake (which you can decorate!) and each time you do $1 is donated to Cancer Care for Kids. And bakeries all around the country are participating by selling special cupcakes with proceeds going to Cancer Care for Kids (that list is also a great way to discover bakeries in your area). If you buy some of these special cupackes, take a photo and send it to us!

ANNUAL CUPCAKES FOR A CAUSE™ WEEK SUPPORTS

NEW YORK CITY KIDS AFFECTED BY CANCER

Campaign involves NYC bakeries and launches virtual "e-cupcakes" to raise awareness

New York, NY, Sept. 10—From October 15 - 21, 2007, leading bakeries in and around New York City will team up with parents and kids for the fourth annual Cupcakes for a Cause™, supporting children affected by cancer.

Participating bakeries in the week-long event will sell specially decorated cupcakes and donate a portion of the proceeds from their sale to CancerCare for Kids®, a program that provides free, professional counseling and support services to children affected by cancer.

Each cupcake sold through the Cupcakes for a Cause campaign bears a candy version of the smiling-face logo of the CancerCare for Kids program. Last year’s event raised more than $50,000 for the program.

General Mills is returning for the second year as a sponsor of Cupcakes for a Cause and New York sweetery Crumbs will again be the “spokesbakery” for the event. Crumbs, which first opened in 2003 by husband and wife team Mia and Jason Bauer and now has four New York locations, launched a national craze as the originator of the gourmet cupcake.

New to the event this year, parents and kids can help raise awareness and additional funds for the program by visiting the official Cupcakes for a Cause website, at www.cupcakesforacause.org, where they can decorate their own virtual E-Cupcake and send it to a friend. For every E-Cupcake sent, a Cupcakes for a Cause sponsor will contribute one dollar to the program.

“Cupcakes for a Cause is a great way to do something fun with your family while helping children affected by this devastating disease,” said Diane Blum, executive director of CancerCare. “Children diagnosed with cancer, and those who have a parent or sibling with cancer, face very difficult emotional questions and concerns that most kids their age don’t have. Our oncology-trained social workers help children understand cancer, talk about their feelings and become less afraid of the disease.”

A complete list of participating bakeries in the New York City area and nationwide can be found at www.cupcakesforacause.org. Parents who are interested in hosting a bake sale can also visit the website to find more information about the event and to download free materials to help them advertise their bake sale.
