Reader question: Help with fondant

Can anyone help out this reader below? Please answer in the comments. Thanks!

Hi! I've been reading your blog and loving your pictures. I found you when I was searching for ideas for my daughter's first birthday party. After my first daughter's first birthday, I was convinced that cupcakes are absolutely the way to go when you've got a baby to take care of--everybody can just grab one on their own and I don't have to serve.

Anyway, I am an inexperienced and entirely self-taught cake decorator, and I want to make cupcakes topped with cut-out fondant flowers for my daughter's birthday. My question is, how far in advanced can I make the flowers to put on the cupcakes? Is two weeks too long? The less I have to do in the days before the party, the better.

I have made the fondant flowers a week in advance and they kept just fine. If you are using premade rolled fondant my only suggestion would be to use a flavoring. I dont really think premade fondant tastes that great, but if you are just using it for decoration then it is ok. Just make sure to not put the flowers on the cupcakes until the last minute.

Hi Rachel
You would be absolutely fine making sugar flowers two weeks in advance. I would advise keeping them in a cool environment as fondant doenst like heat ! A tupperware box or similar for storage....fondant stores well like this for weeks and weeks really but do as near to the event as you can so the taste is fresh. 2 weeks not a prob.
Good luck, hope this helps

To echo Cara, I'd say use flavoring...and liberally. I really like Wilton's clear vanilla and butter flavor. I'm also a fan of any almond flavoring...

i just made this last week and i can't tell you how easy it is. just a bag of marshmallows, a pile of icing sugar and a microwave. it is also really tasty. i keep snacking on the leftovers.

i didn't let it sit overnight, and instead of shortening i used non-stick spray. i would also recommend initially stirring with a knife to keep hands away from extreme stickiness and potentially hot marshmallows
it is a very forgiving recipe and takes about 5 minutes to make. i didn't try to dye it but it used cookie cutters to make decorations for the tops of my cupcakes. good luck! it can be a lot of fun!

Hi...found your question on Chicago Sun Times. I love doing decorations etc & am completely self-taught too. Posted a cake a while ago using marzipan made from scratch; made flowers, leaves etc with small cookies cut-outs. I'm posting the link here in case you wish to take a look! Cheers Deeba
