Dolcissimo closes its doors; are there too many cupcakeshopts in the OC?

Dolcissimo Bake Shop in Orange County closes

Gluttonista (part of the OC Register) reports on a bakery closing: (via Fas Food Maven)

Dolcissimo, one of the handful of glossy cupcakeries to open in the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area, abruptly closed its doors last week. The phone number is disconnected, though Yelpers are speculating that the shop is relocating to … Chino Hills.

With roughly a dozen cupcakeries in O.C., is this a sign that cupcake shops here have hit their saturation peak?

You can vote in their poll; as of 7:50 pm EST, there were 107 yes votes, and 31 no (I voted no, even though I don't live there so really don't know).

Now we bring this to our international readership: is the closing of one cupcake bakery going to have a ripple effect and signal the beginning of the end? We think, most emphatically, not, but it may be a sign that bakeries need to raise their game and really pay close attention to:

The product they offer

Their service

Their competition

Trends in cupcake baking

Offering a whole package (WiFi, beverages, food, etc.)

Offering special events, pursuing customer loyalty

i can say, hands down, that i'm not sad to see them go.
1. they could never get their opening day straight.
2. they were going to be called babycakes, but that name is trademarked. they had a big ol' sign up and everything, and ended up having to change the name and put a new one up.
3. they had baking issues for the first week or two.
4. their customer service sucks/sucked.

i don't think there's an oversaturation...
chino, or wherever, can have them.

I totally agree with your observations about what bakeries should be doing. At Retro, we strive to LISTEN (yes, LISTEN) to our customers, and then do our VERY best to give them what they want! Most times, they've come up with some GREAT ideas, and we've built wonderful relationships that way! And if we can't do something, we follow-up and try to find another solution even if it's at ANOTHER bakery(think Macy's and Gimble's in It's a Wonderful Life).
The GOLDEN RULE never fails.

The OC is definitely not over saturated yet! We have a handful of Cupcake Bakeries none of which have outstanding product! I have yet to figure out why Sprinkles gets hype! They have awful cupcakes! I think people just buy them for the name (typical OC), obviously they are not cupcake connoisseurs. I have purchased a dozen from Five Sweets (Yuck!), Mrs. Beasley's (Double Yuck!)Sprinkles and Dolcissimo. I tried 2 from Bristol Farms 1 was good the other not so good. Each have a cake of icing that are good but not the whole package! French's Cupcake Bakery has 18-20 flavors that are the best I have found in the OC so far. If in town I suggest the Lemon Blueberry, the Mimosa and the Killer Chocolate!

i agree with you on mrs. beasley's. those are some of the nastiest cupcakes i think i've ever had (i think toast in la takes the cupcake for the nastiest!).
five sweets' cupcakes aren't totally bad...they just not the best. her cakes though are frickin' DEVINE!!! i ordered a cake for a friend's b-day. it was decorated like it was a home economics project, but goodness...the cake. wooo!!!
haven't been to french's since they've introduced all the new flavors, but that lemon blueberry...mmm, mmm, mmm.
so for me, the best in orange county isn't really in orange county. but it's close enough. frosted cupcakery in belmont.
hands down.

Dolcissimo hasn't closed its doors. They just moved to Chino Hills. Better for them because there aren't any cupcake places in that area.
