Vanilla & caramel cupcakes

Mmm...I LOVE caramel. It's my favorite dessert flavor (especially anything that uses salted caramel!) and I know I'd love these cupcakes.

I made these cupcakes and frosting...the cupcakes were great, moist, a bit too sweet, but really tasty. The buttercream on the other hand tasted like eating carmel flavored butter...any hints or ideas on how to make a great buttercream that doesn't taste like you're just eating a stick of butter?? help!
