How to pitch us: a polite PSA

I just wanted to take a moment to offer a little public service announcement in how to, and how not to, write to bloggers. I’d say us, but I think this common courtesy extends to everyone.

We get a lot of emails at cupcakestakethecake at gmail.com that say something to the effect of:

Why haven’t you blogged about X bakery? It just opened yesterday!

Well, for one thing, there is not a special machine that beams the information about bakery openings magically into our brains. We are all people who do this blog part-time because we love cupcakes. We try our best to post multiple times per day and make it relevant to cupcake lovers around the world.

Therefore, there are always going to be gaps in our knowledge. We follow cupcakes on Google news, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, etc., but we also always welcome suggestions.

If you are interested in passing on any information to us, the chances of getting it blogged are best when all the information is there, like a URL, name, address, any background information about a bakery or business and photos that might be of interest to our readers.

If you are a bakery owner, please let us know; I’ve gotten bizarre emails from bakery owners trying to disguise themselves as dedicated fans…who happen to know all about the inner workings of a given bakery! We are simply people who love cupcakes, and we also have a pretty strong list of blogs at left of other cupcake bloggers who are microblogging their cupcake scenes, like Utah Loves Cupcakes, that you can peruse for more cupcake information.

That being said, due to time constraints and simply the explosion of cupcake news and happenings around the world, we cannot post everything that comes our way and we use our editorial judgment as to what gets posted. We post the photos and news that we are interested in and feel would be of interest to our readers, to the best of our abilities.

In a nutshell, the easier you can make our jobs, the more likely something you send us will get posted. Hostile, rude, demanding and overly entitled emails will not get you very far.

We also have extensive archives of 11,000+ posts about cupcakes. You can search them using the upper-left hand corner of our blog.

Thank you and happy cupcaking!
