It was a sticky split. Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey started Magnolia Bakery in the West Village in 1996, but parted ways— some say bitterly—three years later. In 1999, Appel launched Buttercup Bake Shop, while Torey still runs the show at the bustling Magnolia. “Any relationship that Allysa and I had was a business one and a friendship, and that’s no longer the case,” Appel says. Torey, for her part, plays down any competition. “We have no rivalries going on with other bakeries making cupcakes,” Torey says.” We don’t have negative hard feelings about any of these things.”
