One thing I'm always interested in is how a bakery decides to name its cupcakes. Some go with celebrity names, like Lux Sugar, or city names, like Cities Cupcakes. Some opt for the tried and true descriptions, but I think finding a classy way to rename things like "chocolate" and "vanilla" and "red velvet," as well as more creative cupcakes, gives your bakery an edge, perhaps that little something extra that will make someone pause and say, "Now that looks even more intriguing."
Of course, a good name can only go so far. Your product also has to stand up to the taste test. That being said, most of the cupcakes we post about, since we're in New York, we haven't tried (but we do eat cupcakes in our travels and those that are sent to us). So when we do these spotlights, it's about what the cupcakes look like, what speaks to us from the thousands of photos posted in our Flickr group.
Something that struck me about Couture Cupcakes, which serves the DC and Virginia areas (see their Flickr account for more images) is that their cupcakes are all named after women.
This is the Pamela, a vanilla buttercream with caramel swirl on a brownie cupcake
Bella Lucia, filled with Nutella in honor of a friend who made a Nutella cake
Ruby - "Little Ruby is the darling daughter of a friend of mine. Ruby loves strawberries, that is her favorite fruit. So this flavor suits her perfectly."
Others don't have specific names, but are fun and attention-getting anyway:
Luggage tag cupcakes for a client who wanted travel-themed cupcakes and whose favorite color is pink!
