Do sausage meatloaf cupcakes still count as cupcakes?

Do sausage cupcakes count?

What do you think? Do something like these Sausage Meatloaf Cupcakes with Creamy Potato Frosting by Teri Tsang Barrett as seen on Rachael Ray's website (via Chef Lisa) count as "cupcakes?"

I think they're cute, and yes, we've covered savory cupcakes here before, but is a cupcake only about the shape? I'm leaning towards no.

I made these for my little cousins and they were a hit. Of course, the older one made fun of me for months afterward but she still conceded that they were delicious. :p

No! Those do not count as cupcakes! Cupcakes are for dessert, always!

There's such a thing as savory cheesecake, so why not savory cupcakes? I've made these for dinner before (and some variations on the theme - sausage cupcakes with poached egg and hollandaise "frosting"), and we've always called them cupcakes.

I completely agree with the previous comments. CAKE is what we're talking about. Even if it's slightly savory like carrot or pumpkin cupcakes we're talking about something for dessert... unless you serve meatloaf for dessert? Oh well. It's funny that I wouldn't really care if they were named "meatloaf muffins" but to label them as cupcakes is just wrong. :P

I do think the idea is pretty cool itself. Great for appetizers for a a party. However, a cupcake is a sweet, delicious treat. They keyword in a cupcake is cake and obviously those are not cake, but i sure wouldn't mind trying those! :D

I made these and they were delicious! I posted on my blog in case you want to have a lookie. I made my family believe that we were having cupcakes for dinner since it was National Chocolate cupcake day and they did nearly until they bit into it! The mashed potatoes were so creamy and wonderful, they looked like real frosting!

Such fun!
