Hometownlife.com let us know about a new cupcake bakery in Canton, Michigan, called Swirls Cafe:

"I never envisioned having a cafe, but this has been a lot of fun," said the former mortgage loan officer of Swirls Cafe, the cupcake haven she opened nearly a year ago in Canton.

The eatery, located at 42480 Cherry Hill Road, touts itself as having "the best cupcakes in Canton" and features flavors such as apple pie spice, cherry charm and mocha nut swirl.

Rankin, a Canton resident and a married mother of two, said the idea for the business was planted after she watched a television program featuring a cupcake entrepreneur.

"Cupcakes tap into a center of innocence," she said, adding that she had grown frustrated with the mortgage lending business and wanted a change of pace.

"I wanted to do something different, but I wanted it to be something that hadn't been done to death."

And with the resurgence of the bake-sale staple, Rankin says she found her niche.



Flavors include:

Apple Pie Spice

Yummy spice cake filled with apples and pecan topped with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles of cinnamon or pecan dust

Mocha Nut Swirl

Our yummy dark chocolate cake topped with vanilla and macadamia nut butter cream frosting dusted with chocolate powder

Seven Up (7up) Cake

Yummy vanilla cake with 7up soda and lemon topped with butter cream frosting and coconut

Sweet Potatoes Pie

Moist vanilla cake mixed with yummy sweet potatoes topped with brown sugar butter cream frosting

Michigan Bumpie Cake

Chocolate or vanilla cake topped with butter cream frosting covered with a coat of chocolate.
