Not So Dirty vs. Dirty cupcakes at Sweet Revenge

Sweet Revenge not so dirty cupcake

Last night, I called East Village bar/cupcake shop Sweet Revenge to see if they were still open. It was 10:50 and they officially close at 11. It was also extremely cold out and I'd just trekked all the way to Batch with no luck. Oh, and it wasn't that I needed and emergency nighttime cupcake; I had to buy some to bring to a lunchtime meeting today and knew I wouldn't have time during the day today.

Owner Marlo Scott said to hurry over, and I did. They were almost out of cupcakes, with one Crimson & Cream and several of the Not So Dirty, their milk chocolate cupcake (their ultra-rich dark chocolate cupcake is the Dirty). I got the cupcakes I needed for my meeting and then said out loud, "Have I tried the Not So Dirty?" I couldn't remember, because usually I get the Sweet Revenge (peanut butter frosting/chocolate inside/vanilla cake) or the Pure (vanilla).

So I decided to try the cupcake you see above and oh my goodness! If you ask me, it beats the frosting off the Dirty, which I can only eat a few bites of...delicious bites, but still. With this one, I ate it with a fork, and then literally was licking the wrapper. It was sweet and chocolatey, but not too much so. My biggest complaint about cupcakes these days, especially because I wind up eating them quite a bit, is that they are often way too sweet. I tend to prefer mini cupcakes because I can finish them without feeling like my mouth has overdosed on sugar. This milk chocolate was creamy and lush and went perfectly with the chocolate cake, which was moist, but a little bit crumbly.

So I am a new convert to the Not So Dirty cupcake. I was also there on Friday and had chocolate gelato in a cupcake and to be honest, can't even remember which cupcake it was, perhaps the Dirty. So if you're in the East Village and have a cupcake craving, I highly recommend them. You can also get a glass of wine or coffee or tea, which in this bitterly cold weather, I'm drinking a lot of (tea, that is).

I am literally drooling. Those cupcakes sound freaking awesome! You did a great job describing them. I feel like I could actually taste them. Which is why I'm drooling. Haha

I'm partial to the Dirty, but you can't go wrong with any Sweet Revenge cupcake, which are big, rich and among the City's best. So satisfying! I'd describe them as a grown-up cupcake. The coffee is great, too. It's always worth a trip to this gem of a savory/sweet spot in the West Village.;)
