New contest: Win a copy of cupcake-filled novel Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs

You still have until April 30th at 5 pm EST to enter our contest to win The Cupcake Kit from Chronicle Books, but in the meantime, here's another contest!

Cover of Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs - WIN a copy at Cupcakes Take the Cake

Comfort Food is the latest novel by Kate Jacobs, just out in paperback and a New York Times bestseller. Not only are there cupcakes on the cover, but there's a cupcake recipe in the book and the book revolves around dessert. We'll be posting the recipe and will have an interview with Kate Jacobs as soon as I finish reading the book! You can read an excerpt here, and we'll give you a little taste:

February, 2006

Gus Simpson adored birthday cake.

Chocolate, coconut, lemon, strawberry, vanilla–she had a particular fondness for the classics. Even though she experimented with new flavors and frostings, drizzling with syrups and artfully arranging hibiscus petals, Gus more often took the retro route with piped-on flowers or a flash of candy sprinkles across the iced top. Because birthday cake was really about nostalgia, she knew, about reaching in and using the senses to remember one perfect childhood moment.

After twelve years as a host on the CookingChannel–and with three successful shows to her credit–Gus had made many desserts in her kitchen studios, from her creamy white chocolate mousse to her luscious peach torte, her gooey caramel apple cobbler and her decadent bourbon pecan pie. A "home cook" without culinary school training, she aimed to be warmly elegant without veering into the homespun: she strived to make her dishes feel complete without being complicated.

Still, birthday cake was something altogether different: one sweet slice fed the spirit as much as the stomach. And Gus relished that perfect triumph.

Kate is on her book tour (click for dates) right now and blogged:

Note to everyone: Expect some of the most delicious cupcakes and treats at many of the events!

You can, of course, also follow her on Twitter.

And for those who are too impatient, the book is for sale on Amazon and at other online bookstores.

Thanks to publisher Berkeley, we have 3 copies to give away!

Like the last one, just leave a comment (and a way for us to reach you, whether link or email address), and this time, tell us what your favorite novel is! (Doesn't have to be cupcake-related) Deadline: May 18, 5 pm EST

Winner will be chosen randomly. U.S. only; no P.O. boxes.

Please note that we moderate comments so give us 24 hours to approve your comment; don't post it again immediately as it makes our job harder.

My favorite novel is The Giver, by Lois Lowry. Ever since I read it in 7th grade (many years ago now) it's stuck with me as a scary, yet beautiful comment on society and the human spirit.

I'm bad at long-term relationships, and don't have a life-long favourite.

In this moment . . . a short by Isak Dinesen, Babette's Feast, and . . . even choosing a momentary favourite is ludicrously hard . . . Like Water for Chocolate.

I think I need a snack.
I love all Harry Potter books!

My favourite novel... well it's a toss up between a few but I think I'll commit to Tales of the City as it was a bright spark of excitement at a time when I was reading a lot of dark weird novels. It was an insight into a different world and made San Francisco a new exciting corner of the US for me when I'd grown up thinking all there was to see and do in America was the bustly New York and the scary theme parks of Florida. I must have reread the book a dozen times at least by now and perhaps influenced by the romanticism of Tales I went and ended up married to an amazing Californian lady - we now take each other on very different tours of SF (mine the weird fan spots of Tales, her the much more classy cultural highlights) whenever we visit the States.

Baking also features occasionally but merrily in Tales: Mrs Madrigal also bakes a good batch of brownies whilst Micheal's mother makes meaningful pound cake.

hi - love your blog! and would love to win "comfort food" too. your awesome cupcake photos keep me from spinning into a cubicle-related depression.

my favorite novel: the gastronomical me, by m.f.k. fisher. she's a food/travel writer from WW1 era and possesses a classiness and charm that (i think) nobody can touch. the book is her life, meal by meal. everything from a six-course feast in a french bistro to a rustic pot of beans and stale sourdough bread while sitting on her bare radiator to stay warm. it's enchanting and totally transporting and changed the way i think about food forever.

thanks!
