So last night, after eating a very healthy dinner filled with veggies from Whole Foods, I was in Union Square and decided to check out the Crumbs kosher for Passover cupcakes, since I skipped CupcakeCamp last night because of Passover. I tend to think that, well, I can live without cupcakes for a week, and, in my general opinion, that's sortof the point; to go without, to remind us, etc., all the things that one talks about at a seder. It's not necessarily about recreating everything to seem like the things we normally eat.
That being said, I think it's great that bakeries are offering kosher for Passover treats for those who want them and wanted to check them out (I am still going to try to post a Passover cupcake roundup soon).
Here's what they were offering: a raspberry cupcake, vanilla or chocolate fondant, each with vanilla or chocolate (respectively) filling, and one that I think was nut cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate shavings on top. They were $4.50 each, which it doesn't need to be said is a lot of money for a cupcake (they also have chocolate/candy-covered pieces of matzot for sale).

I chose the one with vanilla fondant:

I took a big bite, and it was okay, very sweet. I am not a huge fan of fondant generally other than to look at it, though I did like their Lolly LaCrumb cupcake. But then I started to eat it in sections to taste each part and...the cake wasn't my thing. It was pretty tasteless, and there was an odd aftertaste to it. I can't pinpoint exactly what I didn't like about it, just that the combined taste just wasn't satisfying. The filling was the best part but even that was very, very sweet. So for $4.50, I would much rather get the chocolate-covered matzot or some macaroons or something.

Much as I love cupcakes, I think there are times when it's better to skip them, and this week, for me, anyway, is one of them. I hope that's not heresy around these parts, and maybe if I found one that was incredible, I'd change my tune, but instead I'm plotting all the cupcakes I want to eat when Passover's over.
Some very pretty pastel Easter cupcakes at Crumbs:

And in non-holiday Crumbs cupcake news, they also have lemon meringue and Fluffer Nutter cupcakes, both of which I want to try at some point.
Also, just had to share that I'm blogging on a bus! Bolt Bus, where there is both wireless and you can charge your computer. Pretty cool.
I'd love to try another kosher for Passover cupcake if I can find one in NYC this week, for the sake of the blog. I tend to try Crumbs because they're easy for me to get to since they're all over the city.
At the risk of heresy again, sometimes I like taking a little break from eating cupcakes because, well, I do look at photos of them multiple times daily and I think overconsumption sometimes makes me look at a cupcake and just be extremely nonplussed. So cupcake breaks get me excited to eat cupcakes again; it doesn't take much, don't worry.
Anyone else have good/bad experiences with kosher for Passover cupcakes? There are some recipes floating around the Internet that I'll try to post soon too.
