Tomato soup cupcake: Yay or Nay?

We've heard about all sorts of savory cupcakes over the years, and the latest one causing a stir is the signature cupcake of newly-opened (as of last Friday) The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company in Seattle, the tomato soup cupcake.

Seattle food bloggers have tasted the cupcake and given their verdicts.

According to Megan Seling at The Stranger's Slog, "Tomato Soup Cupcakes Don't Taste Like Tomato Soup." She writes:

But it's not a savory, tomato-y cupcake at all. It's basically an orange-colored, sweet spice cake with a swirl of light, creamy chocolate frosting on top (it's the small cupcake on the left in above photo). You'd never guess there was soup in it. If you like pumpkin bread, chances are you'll be a fan of the tomato soup cupcake.

The lemon and black forest cupcakes were also tasty (I liked those more than the tomato soup cupcake, actually... as the latter was just a tad dry).

Jessie Oleson of CakeSpy writes:

The Tomato Soup Cupcake (shown top) was a pleasant spice cake-y confection--if you didn't know it was made with tomato soup, you probably wouldn't know the source of its je ne sais quoi. The cake was pleasingly moist. I have to admit I think I would have preferred more of a flavor contrast with perhaps a cream cheese frosting (and I will note that Mike did mention on our first conversation that it may be served this way in the future).

Seattle Weekly food blog Voracious has some reporting about the new bakery:

The model for their shop, Hein says, is Dots Cupcakes in Pasadena. "It's little, intimate, fun," he says.

"We're going to have 35 different cupcakes rotated throughout the month," Hein says. Examples: a Black Forest cake, covered in cherry with Italian buttercream; another spread with chocolate ganache covered over by orange frosting, "so you get a little surprise," he promises, when you bite in; and a PB&J cupcake that tastes like a peanut-butter cookie with jelly whipped into cream-cheese frosting. "Our signature cupcake will be a tomato soup cupcake," he adds. "It's really unique, but by far one of the best cupcakes we've tried." No word on whether that will come with a grilled-cheese side.

Yeah, I'd eat it, but what I'd really love is something like the tomato bread I get from the supermarket, but in a cupcake form. Yes, I like savoury cupcakes. Prefer them, even.
