John Hughes inspiration on Mayor Cupcake

From The Daily Times, more news on Mayor Cupcake, starring Lea Thompson:

Somewhere, John Hughes must have been smiling.

Less than a month after the death of the legendary writer-director known for his filmography filled with teen angst, his spirit was alive and well at the Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach.

In town shooting the feature film "Mayor Cupcake" with Dewey Beach businessman Alex Pires at the helm, a trio of Hughes' favorite collaborators were at the famed beachside rock club and Hughes' spirit was running wild....

"Mayor Cupcake," which Pires co-wrote with screenwriter Art D'Alessandro, is Pires' first foray into filmmaking. Co-owner of Dewey Beach's biggest bars, the Cork and the Rusty Rudder, Pires is financing the film himself, as well as serving as its producer and director.

The story follows the unlikely ascent of Mary Maroni, mother and town cupcake-maker, to the position of mayor of Bridgeville. It's a Sarah Palin-type storyline that even includes a cameo by Fox News' Greta Van Susteren, who comes to town to interview the unlikely town leader.

A few days before shooting the Hughes-inspired performance at the Cork, Pires and the rest of the cast were filming a scene at Rehoboth Elementary School, which serves as the site for a Bridgeville town meeting in the film.

It's a hectic scene with all the main players in the film on set, including Frankie Faison, who played Deputy Commissioner Ervin Burrell on HBO's "The Wire," and Dorian Harewood, who played Eightball in "Full Metal Jacket."
