On Saturday, I tried the German chocolate cupcake ($2.75) from Billy's Bakery in Tribeca. Pardon my ugly photo. It wasn't the most attractive cupcake regardless (I obviously need a new camera as the iPhone can only do so much photowise) but I was happy to see a new (to me) flavor there.

The cake was extremely light, I think it was cocoa-flavored but I'm not 100% sure, but it was very airy. The topping was this extremely gooey very rich nut and coconut. Alone, the cake actually didn't have much flavor but with even a little of the very sweet topping, it came to life. (I tend to eat my cupcakes by picking them apart with my fingers to make them last longer.) Overall, this was very different from the typical buttercream cupcake at Billy's and I liked the lighter cake and even though the frosting was ultra sweet (I didn't eat all the frosting), it wasn't as heavy/rich as the buttercream frostings so was a nice alternative (and since they were out of pumpkin cupcakes, I did try the pumpkin pie, which was fresh, fabulous and more pumpkin-y than sugary, but this is not a pie blog so I'll leave it at that). I'd love to see more new flavors make it into the rotation there. I've discovered that even in New York with its many, many cupcake offerings, having tried almost all the bakeries and cupcake options, my taste buds get bored and I want something new (more on new NYC cupcakes, including s'mores, later).
The woman working there told me they'd had pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting earlier in the day but they'd sold out and that those go really fast.
