How nifty is this?!

I've never heard of steamed cupcakes (!), but you can see them here and check out the recipe and blog here. And what lovely pictures!

The necessary hardware to make the bolu kukus (steamed cakes):

I would so love to have a bunch of these! I wonder if you could manufacture them, or just use a bain-marie?

Gorgeous!

Has anyone else experimented with steamed cupcakes? I've made steamed puddings before, but never cupcakes.

Steamed cakes/cupcakes are actually very common in Asian cuisine. In fact you don't need those moulds with holes (I have no idea how to properly name them LOL) You could use souffle moulds (ramekins) for example.

Steamed cakes are popular around Chinese New Years. Almost all Chinese families make them. You'll see them around Chinatown during the holiday season. My mom uses regular cupcake liners and steams them in a big wok. They are definitely different from baked cupcakes.

Ok I'd like to try this. I will try using a ramekin instead unless someone knows of a place in LA that sells the moulds.

there are many steamed goods in indonesia, steamed cupcakes or bolu kukus (bolu=cake, kukus=steamed) is one of them and a pretty old recipe means almost every family in indonesia makes this.
oh and about the mold, they sell the mold everywhere, and quite cheap like $1/12molds.

Hi there, those are my photos and link from my blog :) just a correction, I don't live in Indonesia, but was born there. thanks for putting these here though!

those molds came from Indonesia and I don't think they could be found here. I live in the US so I never could find them here. the holes in the molds are specifically for "bolu kukus", I think without it, the cake won't rise properly.
