Cupcakes are recession-proof, but we knew that already

Still nice to hear as we enter a new cupcake-filled year! From the San Jose Mercury News:

The cupcake wars started in September 2008, when Kara's Cupcakes set up shop at the Town & Country Village and Sprinkles sprung up at Stanford Shopping Center.

The multitude of flavors offered by specialty cupcakes — including peppermint, peanut butter and pumpkin — is part of their appeal, said Andrew Sutherland, general manager of the Sprinkles Cupcakes store. Portability is big, too, he said.

"There's the miniature packaging that appeals to people, just sort of the idea you can grab it and go," Sutherland said. "It's not a big process with a knife and a fork. It's a little more fun."

Sutherland acknowledges high-end cupcakes are a luxury, "but it's a small luxury, one that I think people need more than ever right now. It's $3 and it's a treat for the day."

Or if you're like me, and you don't drink coffee, you choose that for your three dollar indulgence of the day.
