Sweet Cakes Bakery in Chicago

You're so vegan, you probably think this cupcake's about you...no really, this cupcake is about you! Especially if you're a Vegan. But they won't tell you that unless you ask. From the taste of it, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway. Sweet Cakes Bakery is tucked away in Chicago's Ukranian Village at Damen and Iowa.

This family operated bakery features a range of baked goods, scones, muffins, croissants, and infamously - "The Egg" - a cheesy corn muffin with a hard boiled egg baked inside of it. The cupcake selection includes vegan minis in 7 or 8 different flavors daily. The most coveted mini of all is the peanut butter and jelly - it's crazy how much it tastes like PB&J with the crusts cut off! And the selection of "regular" sized cupcakes are hardly regular. They're huge!

Owner and behind-the-scenes baker Emily is a Vegan herself and magically comes up with recipes that could fool anybody. Visitors can see her working in the back through the window just north of the corner entry. Her father Vern is the friendly and kind face of the company, smiling and gracious behind the counter. Together they run the bakery every day except Monday from 8-6.

Recently Brittney from Chicago's Best took a tour of the bakery and talked with people both behind and in front of the counter. It's pretty fantastic that Emily shared some excellent insights on how science and food can come together for some pretty great-looking and tasty vegan treats! Take a look at this "sweet" video here.
