Gooey, delicious sea salted chocolate frosting on cupcakes at Butter Lane

I went back to New York City cupcake bakery Butter Lane and bought two cupcakes last night, out of what was available: pumpkin frosting on chocolate cake and sea salted chocolate on vanilla cake (I'd have preferred banana but it was relatively close to closing so that's what was left). There was a clear winner among the two: the sea salted chocolate! ($3 each.)

Up close you can see the salt amidst the chocolate. This was so rich and gooey and delicious, and the salt kept it from being over-the-top too-rich, the way fudge is for me (not that it tasted like fudge, I'm just saying I can't really eat fudge because it's too rich for my tongue). I kept dipping my finger in and trying to get all the goodness in one bite. It went very well with their moist vanilla cake, though would probably go well with any of their cakes. Again I say this would make a most excellent frosting shot.

The pumpkin frosting tasted like, well, pumpkin, with a hint of spiciness. It was pretty good, but the chocolate cake was a little crumbly and, when tasted just by itself, not that chocolatey. I prefer a sweet chocolate cake with some flavor to it. Together, though, they were a good combination and I recommend this to pumpkin lovers, but personally think it doesn't hold a candle to the sea salted chocolate frosting.

They also have a new fall flavor: tiramisu, but they were out of it. It involves soaking the cake...that's all I remember, so hopefully next time I'll take notes and actually get a chance to try it. I was too excited about the sea salted chocolate.
