Review: Felix's Caketeria

After several nonstarts, I was finally able to get my hands on Felix's Caketeria's cupcakes. Felix himself dropped off six beautiful best-sellers from his eponymous cupcakery yesterday, all the way to NYC from Newtown, PA.

They were left at my local cafe (shoutout to Miss Connie at Coyi Cafe) in a Brooks Brothers paper bag, which was kinda odd (way to promote the brand, Felix!), but they had some business cards inside, which was helpful.

Sadly, "the Elvis" (banana cupcake filled with chocolate ganache and frosted with peanut butter buttercream) was eaten before I got the cupcakes in front of a camera. Countergal (Amy? shoot, I completely spaced on her name) was all over the banana cupcake and I could hardly say no. She was kind enough to share it with me, and we both just loved it.

The cake itself was light and airy, with perfect banana-ness in taste. The filling (chocolate ganache) was rich enough and small enough to complement the cake and the not-to-sweet and totally airy and smooth peanut butter buttercream frosting was delicious. Not grainy at all -- so smooth we wondered if it had been cooked. I was extra-happy because most Elvis cupcakes have bacon and as a vegetarian I have to abstain. So, good start to the 6-pack, but this intrepid explorer had more to delve into.

First up was what I imagined was an upside-down cupcake, but it was a cleverly packed (Oreo-upward) and baked (Martha method) mini Oreo cheesecake cupcake. Now, it's a good thing I had no idea what this was, or I'd never have tasted it and it was a winner. And I'd have missed out. I detest Oreos (sorry, but it's true, I loathe them) and cheesecake isn't high on my list either but this cupcake was fantastic.

I thought it might have been undercooked at first as it was so, well, wet and goopy. (This is not a neat-and-clean assortment of cupcakes, by the way. Have loads of wetnaps ready to go when you indulge in Felix's cupcakes.) But it was perfectly cooked, just cheesecake-y and moist.

So, yes, messy and gooey and delicious. Rich, dense, and yummy. But, I have to wonder, was it a cupcake? Baked in a cup, yes, but not cake-y at all. But no quibbling about the fact that it was tasty.

Next up, the pumpkin moon pie:

Felix's Caketeria

Initially, I thought this had a hint of baking powder or baking soda aftertaste, but then when I tasted it at room temperature (as opposed to the cold, refrigerated version) I couldn't taste the aftertaste any longer. I thought all the cupcakes tasted better room temp., which is what I usually try to achieve when serving or tasting treats.

Again, are these cupcakes? I don't think so. But they were good. Sticky and pumpkin-y, but not necessarily a cupcake.

The rest of the pack were all definitely cupcakes. Like this delicious carrot cake one.

Felix's Caketeria

I was impressed with the yummy walnuts and the long pieces of real carrot. And possibly shreds of something else -- apple maybe? Parsnips? Not sure but whatever it was this is one delicious cupcake.

Felix's Caketeria

See the long grated carrots and possibly another veggie or a fruit? Not pineapple, I am pretty sure.

The frosting was very tangy, perfectly cream-cheese-y and thick enough not to droop, without being too thick. This one's also a winner. I would have gladly passed these off as my own homemade if they weren't so perfectly frosted/decorated.

Also scrumptious was the chocolate peanut butter.

Felix's Caketeria

It was so dense and rich and moist...heavy and almost brownielike in its chocolateness. If you like dark and heavy chocolate with cocoa-y taste this is the cupcake for you. With the wonderful peanut butter buttercream so smooth and creamy and airy, it tasted amazing with a glass of milk. [N.B. I needed an extra glass of milk after the cupcake was finished.]

I wish Felix's were closer, as I could deal with another one of these, immediately. And then possibly one/week thereafter.

Felix's Caketeria

Sooo good.

Last and sadly kinda least was the salted chocolate caramel.

Felix's Caketeria

Let me say that this was the cupcake I was dying to taste and the most excited about. I love salted caramel and the combo of chocolate and caramel. When Felix emailed me this one was on its way to me, I was beyond excited. But the cupcake disappointed.

The cake itself was fine, with the same sort of dark chocolate that the peanut butter frosted one had. It was caramel frosting that didn't hold up. It was missing any caramel taste, and had a bland empty taste, with a waxy sort of mouthfeel. And the cupcake had an empty hole in the middle, visible when sliced open.

Felix's Caketeria

I know it's hard to see here as some of the frosting was carried down by my sloppy knifework. Maybe it had a center that was "baked in" during the baking process? Maybe it was supposed to be filled? Maybe it had been filled and the filling worked its way into the cake? Not sure but this was the only disappointment in a winning set of treats. As always, your mileage may vary.

So, if you are in Newtown, PA, or nearby, check out Felix's Caketeria. And tell Felix that CTTC sent you!
