Cupcake Stop Closes Up Shop

Today there's a brief article from the ABA Journal about Cupcake Stop.
A novel mobile cupcake business run by a New York Law School graduate has closed, despite a seemingly winning concept that quickly put CupcakeStop in the headlines. "Dear CupcakeStoppers, after nearly 2 years in operation, CupcakeStop will be closing. Thank you for all your support and patronage!" announced a tweet yesterday. Tweets earlier this week said that the CupcakeStop Truck had sold out and closed early due to rain and urged the shop's 16,000 followers to visit its bricks-and-mortar store. But the website for the business that Lev Ekster opened in 2009 also is down and the phone isn't being answered at its Limelight Marketplace outpost, reports the Village Voice on a Restaurant News and Notes page. A post on the Grub Street blog of New York magazine says the cupcake shop has been shuttered.

We first heard about the shuttering of Cupcake Stop yesterday via a post from GrubStreet.  It is hard to believe as Cupcakes Take The Cake held a cupcake meetup at the Greenwich Avenue flagship location just two months ago. From the looks of things, Cupcake Stop had a recipe for success with a diverse income stream model; cupcakes were sold from their trucks, cupcakes were sold at The Limelight Marketplace and from two stores New Jersey and New York.  As Rachel and I are often asked about the cupcake business, recently people have asked if there is a "cupcake bubble". I don't think so. There could a whole host of reasons why Cupcake Stop is closing and it may not be because it failed financially.  We wish Lev the best of luck as he is definitely an entrepreneur who will be in business again.
