Candy cane, chocolate chocolate, dulce de leche and raspberry lemon curd cupcakes at Lulu's Cake Boutique

I stopped in to Lulu's Cake Boutique on 8th Avenue in Chelsea (Manhattan) to the other day, lured in by their candy cane cupcakes. They're known for doing their version of desserts like Twinkies (right now they have egg nog Twinkies) and their cupcakes have very butter frostings. I bought 4 cupcakes for $11 ($2.75 each): chocolate/chocolate, candy cane, dulce de leche and raspberry/lemon-filled.

The candy cane, which has a candy-cane-like frosting with actual bits of candy cane, is wonderfully minty. A little goes a long way. The cake (vanilla) was okay, but with all of these save for the chocolate/chocolate, the frosting was many times better than the cake. The dulce de leche, I'm happy to say, wasn't too sweet; the swirls of caramel added to it and it was rich but light in texture. The raspberry frosting was very, very buttery, far too buttery for my taste; I had trouble tasting the raspberry amidst the butter. However, the lemon curd filling was wonderful, and I'd love to see a lemon frosting/lemon curd cupcake from them. The chocolate/chocolate cupcake was my favorite; the chocolate covering on top was delicious. you can either bite right into this cupcake, or crack some of the chocolate shell off and dip it into the creamy chocolate frosting. The cake was tasty and went very well with the frosting. All in all, the chocolate cupcake was the winner for me.
