The latest in the The Cupcake Diaries middle grade series by author Coco Simon, Katie, Batter Up!, is officially released today (it's also available for Kindle). This is the fifth book in the series about four friends who bake cupcakes together and go through the highs and lows of middle school life.
In this book, the cupcake angle is that the girls are figuring out which cupcake to bake for Katie's Grandma Carole's birthday. They know she likes sports and spring, and they test our recipes, finally settling on a blueberry cupcake and creating a cupcake cake. In the meantime, Katie realizes that all her friends have hobbies but she doesn't. She tries to play a few sports and isn't happy with her performance, but winds up making the softball team. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens with that. I like that each book deals with one of the girl's family or social life or school problems but also explores their cupcake baking and figuring out recipes and how to run a business (they weren't charging for the grandmother's cupcakes, but have in other books). As you can see below, there's also cute cupcake art in the book. A series I definitely recommend for kids.
