Cupcake tips from CooksIllustrated.com

Cooks Illustrated covers just about ANY food problem/issue you can think of, so I decided to check their website (membership required) to see if they had any cupcake-transportation advice. Turns out they did:

Cupcake aficionados know how messy frosted cupcakes can be when packed into a lunch bag or box, even when plastic wrap is used. Celeste Garber of Pittsburgh, Pa., offers this tip for preserving the luscious frosting. Cut the cupcake in half horizontally and flip the top half upside down so that the icing is in the middle, making a little layer cake. Wrap the cupcake (or piece of frosted sheet cake) in plastic wrap or a plastic bag, and the cupcake is good to go.

Safe Transport for Cupcakes
One accidental bump can mean disaster for a frosted cupcake (or any other delicate pastry) that you are transporting. That's why Annette Nirenberg of Millburn, N.J., came up with this use of an inverted pint-size deli container to give her cupcakes a little extra protection in transit.

Place the container lid bottom-side up on the work surface (the groove that seals the container should be facing up), and put the cupcake on it. Invert the container, slip it over the cupcake and down onto the lid, and seal it shut, thus creating a safe shell around the cupcake.
Of course, the recently invented high-tech cupcake transportation option is the Cup-A-Cake container, which I'll be "test driving" this weekend. Keep your eyes open for my full report (with photos) next week!

the cup-a-cake container is fab. i had my students toss my cupcake around in it and it was still perfect.
