Reader question: cupcakes stands and Oregon cupcakes

dear cupcake godesses,

much like yourselves, i am obsessed with the cup of cake. i am having cupcakes at my wedding and i want to incorporate said cupcakes into centerpieces on each table. i've seen some cool stands like this one but alas, it is too big. each table should have about 12 cupcakes. any ideas?

and a second inquiry - i live in san francisco but am getting married on the coast of oregon. do you know of any fantastic cupcake shops (aka bakeries) in the portland area?

many thanks for any help and also for your super blog.

I don't know of any small cupcake stands, but you could make some of your own by taking an ordinary cake stand like this one and inverting a ramekin on it to crete a tiered effect.

That wire stand is beautiful and I haven't found any that hold fewer...there are graduated cardboard tiers available, but for a wedding, maybe you should get the wire one and just put something else in the bottom row...like your wedding favors or flowers.

Another great place to post is
portlandfood.org.

Despite living in PDX and loving cupcakes I haven't actually explored any bakery options here. I have had the 7th Heaven cupcakes and other yummy cakes at JaCiva's so I'd recommend calling them if you have no other suggestions. Or call the folks at Pix Patisserie. I haven't seen any cupcakes there but I may simply have been distracted by their fabulous dessert selection. My guess is that they could connect you to a cupcake baker extraordinare.

You will find two cupcake stands at www.wilton.com. One is for 23 cupcakes ($29.99)and the other one is for 38 cupcakes ($39.99). The larger one is currently out of stock. Hope this helps!

I'm getting married next year and plan on using the same idea for centerpieces. I've been looking all over for ideas but here's my concern. I don't want to have an empty centerpiece once the cupcakes are gone. So, someone has recommended using the stand that holds 23 and filling 12 with cupcakes and the rest with flowers. Any other ideas?

In case anyone is still looking, here is a small cupcake stand, it holds 13 cupcakes.
Enjoy.

MY FAMILY OWNED A BAKERY FOR 59 YEARS AND EACH GENERATION WORKED THERE. MY UNCLE MIKE CUSTOM BUILT ALL OUR WEDDING AND CUPCAKE STANDS. THEN HE STARTED HIS OWN BUSINESS, BUILDING CREATIVE WEDDING AND CUPCAKE STANDS, AND CUTTING BOARDS. ALL HIS OWN FABULOUS DESIGNS, AND CUSTOM STANDS FOR PEOPLE. HE HAS HIS OWN CUSTOM SHOP IF YOU NEED TO GET A HOLD OF HIM HIS WEBSITE IS mccreathdesign.com and HIS E-MAIL IS mccreathdesign@aol.com. just in case this will help or answer your questions about cupcake stands!

Most definitely get your cupcakes from St. Cupcake in Portland Oregon. www.saintcupcake.com. The. Best. Cupcakes. Ever.

St. Cupcake does have great cakes, and I know my FH is a fan of Cupcake Jones, but I've never eaten any of their creations (yet). Grand central does EVERYTHING well... so hopefully that gives you a few options. You also might consider contacting Marsee Baking (Excellent cookies and pastries, but I don't know if they do cupcakes!) Hope this helps!

Hi all!
I am also doing cupcakes as my centerpiece and I first started buying the wilton 13 cupcake stands and added toole to the bottom adn I was going to put LED tealights underneath to give a glowing affect, however, our wedding guest list grew and now we are rentling Jumbo tables and the centerpiece is just too small...
I found a great website called jafgifts.com and they have a bunch of different stands...there's even on with a vase attached in the middle where you add flowers and height to your centerpiece...
oh and I am going to splurge and buy the laser cut wrappers from Orchid paper...$1.00/wrapper but just adds to the elegance for the wedding

good luck

Another comment to the bride worried about the empty stands...the wilton ones are so cheap that I want them to be empty at the end so that people can take them home, plus people aren't going to pay attention to what your center piece looks like after dinner, especially since it's edible...that's the point to be empty at the end. They will see the effect when they all walk in and sit down. ( this was my concern at first when I began thinking about cupcakes as center pieces)

Well...I live on the Oregon Coast and I don't know of any really great cupcake shops...but...if you are willing to transport, Saint Cupcake in Portland is pretty good. Their staff is lovely and helpful, they package the product well and make it easy to transport and they are moist and delicious. In addition, the atmosphere is simply adorable!

There is one place called Cupcake Jones (used to be Baby Cakes or Babycakes) and I would NOT recommend them at all. The staff is grouchy, the packaging sucks (it smashes the top of the cupcakes), and they were dry - milk with a cupcake is only good when you choose it - not when it's required.

All of this to say: Over Cupcake Jones, I would choose Saint Cupcake any day of the week.

As far as stands go, check out kitchen kaboodle or bed, bath and beyond!

Thanks,
