Celebrity cupcake craze

If you know of any celebrity cupcake stories (we know about Katie Holmes, and have a photo of Renee Zellwegger holding one, please share either photos, stories, gossip, whatever). We know that (almost) everyone loves cupcakes!

Cupakes don't just satisfy our selfish sides, though. They also make us feel like celebrities. With their recent appearances on the hit TV show “Sex and the City,” cupcakes are making their way back into young New Yorkers’ hearts and stomachs, and celebrities like J.Lo and the stars of Seinfeld can sometimes be seen devouring these pocket-sized delights at the Cupcake Café. "You never know who's going to show up," said Alex Christoforos, who works at the Cupcake Café.

Jonathan Rubenstein, who owns a Greenwich Village coffee shop called Joe, knows exactly which celebrity will appear at his doorstep. For the past six months, Rubenstein has been selling cupcakes made by Amy Sedaris, creator and star of Comedy Central's "Strangers With Candy." "People get a kitsch factor that this celebrity baked these in her kitchen," said Rubenstein. "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker made Sedaris' cupcakes famous when she asked Rubenstein to carry the comedienne's baked goods.

Along with cupcakes' star quality, they also quench young people's need for nostalgia. Inspiring sugar-coated memories of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles birthday parties and Strawberry Shortcake-themed sleepovers, cupcakes are one way many twenty-somethings are reliving their childhoods. “People grew up with them. They’re a bit of nostalgia from when they were kids,” said Rubenstein.
