How often do you eat cupcakes?
Whenever I see a good one, I snap it up! Though keep in mind I am picky, am not too close to the major cupcake places, and am a terrible cook, so I tend to eat cupcakes less often than I’d like to.
What's the best thing about eating cupcakes?
Oh, man. Where do I begin? I guess the frosting and the liquid/pudding filling. Liquid filling is not in every cupcake, but it’s a wonderful surprise when it is.
What's your favorite type of cupcake?
My favorite cupcake—hands-down—is the angel food cupcake they make at 2nd Street CafĂ© in Brooklyn. (I believe it’s considered the Park Slope area.) I don’t know what they put in their frosting, but they should get a patent. It is just amazing. The frosting is like vanilla and buttercream—but very light, not rich—topped with coconut. The cake itself is also light, but with a distinct vanilla flavor. It’s popular too—I just called to see if they have some and they said they’re plum out. When I get married, I will ask them to make an entire cake of that cupcake, like a cupcake-cake, I guess. I also recently had a key lime cupcake near Two Boots movie theater that was out of this world.
How do cupcakes compare/contrast to other baked goods for you?
Cupcakes are pretty high up there, though I like regular cakes as well. Cupcakes are certainly easier to eat than cakes. And I like the liquidy/puddingy filling thing, which you don’t see in regular cakes as often. And there seems to be more variety to cupcakes than cakes—-which you can see clearly on the many different pictures you have on your blog every day.
Is there any innovation you'd like to see made to the cupcake that would improve it for you?
More liquidy filling would be good. Thicker frosting. Lighter-tasting cakes. (Not all of us like it rich.) More use of unconventional flavors.
Do you bake your own cupcakes? Or (even better) have someone who bakes them for you?
I do not bake because, as I mentioned, I’m a horrible cook. (I’ve been known to ruin mix!) My mom bakes them for me sometimes. Isn’t that what moms are for?
What's your first cupcake-related memory?
Nothing I can concretely remember. Probably involved my own or a classmate’s birthday party. I’m sure there were multi-colored sprinkles involved.
What's the most fun you've ever had with a cupcake?
Just eating it is fun enough, I’d say.
