Cupcakes in East Arlington, Massachusetts

Article: "Cupcakes bring back childhood"

They're small, packed with flavor, and a popular trend among desserts - cupcakes. The name refers to any cake baked in a small muffin tin. For many people, eating a cupcake topped with frosting evokes happy childhood memories.

Quebrada Baking Company in East Arlington has been selling chocolate and yellow cupcakes for years. According to Claire Rabin, manager of the Arlington bakery, customers purchase between 15 and 20 dozen cupcakes per week. Chocolate is the most popular flavor. The cupcakes are priced at $1.35 each or six for $7.

"We have a popular petite line of baked goods and the cupcakes go along with that idea," explained Rabin, who has worked at the bakery since 1984. "Smaller, individual servings are what adults want more and more of. For children, a cupcake represents their own little cake."

She believes that the secret to a good cupcake is the quality of the ingredients. At Quebrada, the chocolate cupcakes are made of devil's food cake; the frostings, from Italian meringue buttercream and chocolate ganache. Each cupcake is topped with a spiral swirl of frosting.

As someone who frequents Quebrada (and lived only two blocks away until just a month ago), I must say that although I love the place (and their fantastic line of tiny treats), cupcakes are not their standout item. If you want an awesome cupcake, walk across the street to the Zaxaroplasteion Arlington Bakery. Cupcakes that barely fit in my Cup-A-Cake are sold for just 85 cents, and the counter is run by a sweet lady who will cover you when you're short on dough if you come in often enough. The cupcakes there are light and moist with smooth, creamy icing and just the perfect amount of sprinkles.
