I have no idea what this means - maybe some of you do!

I want to make those tacky cupcakes that are piled with 4 inches of white frosting then a coating about 1/10 of an inch thick in pink or sometimes green. They usually have a frog face with a mouth cut out of it...The frosting is very very thick...I had them many times over as a child from the local bakery and I don't know what they are called so I can't GOOGLE a recipe. Can you help me with the name or a link?? Thanks!! Cheryl

I have seen these before and I think they're called Balfours frog cakes. They're an Australian tradition that I've never heard of (coming from Canada), however I have seen pictures of them but don't remember where. I think they're covered in poured fondant and come in several different colours. Hope this helps.

Here's two photos:

cupcake frog from NYC

cupcake from from Australia!

I am convinced these froggies are the next big cupcake craze...but then again, maybe that's just my love of fondant and cuteness talkin'.

I think I used to see those at the Gruenbaum's bakery in Washington Heights, Manhattan, on 181st Street off of Bennett Avenue. Sometimes they were frogs and I think sometimes they were Cookie Monster.

We have them in the UK as well. I've made them myself. I just made butter madiera cake, baked it in a pan and cut it into squares. Then I piped a large blob of pink buttercream icing on the squares and chilled them.
I then warmed, thinned, and tinted fondant icing light green and poured it it over the chilled cakes. Leave until the icing is totally set (absolutely completely). Cut a thin wedge horizontally in the blob and carefully remove the wedge so you reveal the pink icing underneath. Then you can pipe on the white and black (or chocolate chips/chocolate) blobs for eyes.

hey- i live in australia and they are most definately called the Balfours Frog Cake!
They are an Australian icon- the state of South Australia is where they are homed to. They are on our 'heritage' list and have been around forever- no one can beat it!
