Best Cupcakes in NYC (according to New York Magazine)

In their 2006 issue of Best of New York, New York Magazine has voted Babycakes the very best. Here's what they said:
Babycakes
248 Broome St., 212-677-5047

In a city overrun by copycat cupcakes, we despaired of finding a great one. Moist, crumbly cake. Good, natural flavor. Frosting that wasn’t teeth-achingly sweet. Satisfaction came in an admittedly unconventional package: the vegan version at BabyCakes. Are we actually suggesting that the exclusion of eggs, dairy, sugar, and wheat doesn’t spell doom for a cupcake? That cold-pressed coconut oil, agave nectar, garbanzo flour, and spelt aren’t just substitutes, but superior? Yes, indeed. And you’ve gotta love a place that sells frosting shots for a buck.

I liked their chocolate cake! Haven't had enough cupcake to decide on that yet.

Love, love, love them! Wheat-free carrot cake with totally gooey frosting... yum! Plus, the people there are so nice.

I'm not even a vegan, and I LOVED them! I tried the carrot, chocolate and vanilla, carrot was my fave.
Also tried the sinfully delish chocolate brownie. damn good.

wow it was ridiculously expensive, i could have bought 2 of those cupcakes somewhere else (the w. village haunt comes to mind)

BUT!

definitely one of the best things i've ever tasted. healthful & delicious! = worth the price and the trek there! i probably won't go there all the time but definitely a great treat! (i'm not vegan either)

Why are all these cupcake bakeries using coconut oil?! Coconut oil is one of the least healthful fats on the market because of its extremely high saturated fat content. Although it is a vegetable derived oil and will therefore contain no cholesterol, the high amount of deadly fat in it makes butter look like a healthy alternative!
