CHEAP EATS
Sugar Sweet Sunshine
By Jessalynn Keller
I have always been obsessed with cupcakes. A colorful mini treat—found in rainbow hues and adorned with a blanket of frosting, the cupcake is truly a delightful delicacy. But with any obsession comes the need for perfection, and it’s a challenge to find true excellence when it comes to the cupcake: It can’t be too sweet or too heavy, and most importantly, it must have personality. I feared never experiencing such flawlessness, until I came across Sugar Sweet Sunshine, a cozy little bakery in the heart of NYC’s Lower East Side. With the ambiance of a best friend’s apartment—complete with vintage furniture and 1960s décor—the homey space offers up an assortment of cupcakes, coffees and other baked goodies for the sweet tooths on a budget. But it’s clearly the cupcakes that distinguish this adorable LES nook from the rest. The cast of cupcakes ($1.50 each) is an array of personalities ranging from the classic conservative Sunshine (yellow cake frosted with vanilla buttercream), to the scandalous Sexy Red Velvet (red velvet cake with a satin, buttercream finish), to the exotic Pumpkin (pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing). My personal fave is the Black & White…Just Right, a delectable dark chocolate cake and vanilla buttercream that walks the fine line between sophistication and complete childishness. Magnolia may have established the cupcake on the New York culinary landscape, but Sugar Sweet Sunshine has perfected it—giving every cupcake the personality it deserves.
