More on Kickass Cupcakes

Last month we brought you our interview with the owner of Somerville, Massachusett's Kickass Cupcakes.

Now Bostonist weighs in:

First we tried vanilla. Ours was a sweet, precious number with baby-pink buttercream frosting studded with sugar hearts. We found the cake itself a little dry, but the light, airy, and ample frosting made it go down easy. And quickly—the cupcake disappeared in four bites. Next we tried the mojito cupcake: rum-flavored cake with lime frosting sprinkled with crystal sugar and shredded mint. We were told that this is one of the most popular cupcakes, but for us, these two trends didn’t make a right. We thought the cupcake was cloyingly sweet; more margarita mix than mojito. But we thought that the super chocolate cupcake was a winner—dense, moist, not-too-sweet cake topped with a dollop of chocolate ganache and curls of chocolate.

And the Boston Herald includes Kickass Cupcakes in a roundup on Davis Square:

The newest offering: Kickass Cupcakes, a tiny gourmet-cupcake shop that became an overnight sensation after opening last month.

‘‘It’s been crazy — we’re just trying to keep up with the demand,’’ said owner Sara Ross, who recently moved to Boston from California, where cupcake bakeries are hot. ‘‘I thought Davis Square would be a great place (for this) concept.’’

Mmmm..Chocolate! If you're going to live up to a name like Kick Ass Cupcakes that is one flavor you have to get right!

I'm curious, what's the best cupcake shop name any of you have ever heard. I must admit that Kick Ass Cupackes seems pretty fun and unique.

What a disappointment! After seeing some local cupcake bakeries mentioned in The Boston Globe Magazine on Oct. 14, we anxiously awaited making a trip there the following Saturday. We paid $33 for 1 dozen assorted cupcakes! We shuddered when we heard the price, but figured, hey, we came all this way just for cupcakes, go for it! Huge letdown! Don't know where they get off charging what they do. First shock, cupcakes were VERY small! Second shock, the chocolate one that was featured in the newspaper was unbelievably dry. In our quest for the perfect cupcake we also made it to another of the featured bakeries earlier in the week. Yum Bunnies in Belmont. A half dozen there was $12 and they fared much better. I guess that Kick Ass gets their name from the amount of people that want to kick their asses for wasting their money on the cupcakes!
