Cupcake interview with Esther Blum, author of Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous

Today's cupcake interview veers a little off the topic of cupcakes, but I think it's an important one, especially since one of our very own bloggers is a personal trainer. This book is about staying healthy while also indulging yourself, rather than dieting, and also has good tips on dealing with and preventing hangovers, and advice on which supplements to take for everything from PMS to insomnia. Esther posted on her Amazon blog about some of her inspirations. We, of course, asked her about the cupcake angle to her philosophy!

Why did you decide to write Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous?

I wanted to access people on a public health level and teach people everywhere that nutrition can be fun and sexy!

What is the main message you want readers to take away from the book?

Even the smallest change can bring about a BIG difference.

You focus on supplements for various illnesses; for someone who's basically healthy but wants to make sure they're getting a well-rounded diet, what supplements would you recommend?

I believe in keeping it simple: a multivitamin, trace minerals, and omega-3s will often do the trick for most people.

Where do cupcakes fit into the framework of your eating plan?

Cupcakes are a sweet treat that everyone can enjoy. If the size seems too large, you can split it with a girlfriend or your date, or you can enjoy the mini-cupcakes with much less guilt.

Do you have any tips on making or selecting cupcakes that are on the healthier end of the scale?

If you bake your own cupcakes, use good quality fats that stand up well to heat: real butter or grapeseed oil will do the trick. Stay away from Crisco and margarine, which are quite toxic.

Even though your book is geared towards women, do you think there 's helpful advice for men as well?

Oh absolutely! There's some great advice in there on putting the swing in your ding, and really the overall nutritional content can still apply to men. It's a great sociological experiment; all of the men who read it get sucked in by the Gorgeous in Bed chapter!

And now for some personal questions...

How often do you eat cupcakes?

I enjoy them on special occasions; there's a fabulous bakery 1 block away from my apartment.

What's the best thing about eating cupcakes?,

Getting a bit that has both frosting and cake together.

What's your favorite type of cupcake?

I'm a red velvet convert!

How do cupcakes compare/contrast to other baked goods for you?

There definitely up there in my top three favorite desserts.

Is there any innovation you'd like to see made to the cupcake that would improve it for you?

If only chocolate Hostess cupcakes were healthy…sigh.

Do you bake your own cupcakes? Or (even better) have someone who bakes them for you?

I'm more of a cake baker than a cupcake maker.

What's your first cupcake-related memory?

I don't have the greatest memory but I can tell you that all my cupcake memories are delish!!

What's the most fun you've ever had with a cupcake?

How naughty can I get on this site??

Do you have anything else to add?

I fondly remember watching the Sex and The City finale eating a cupcake with a big shoe on it!
