I am amazed that no one has mentioned what I think are the best cupcakes in NY: from Crumb Bakery. There are several branches of it, but the one I know is at 3rd Avenue, near 78th Street. Their cupcakes are sold at the cafeteria of the Metropolitan Museum, which is where I became introduced to them: heaven. They are very homey, pure comfort food, usually exquisitely simple, like your mother would have made if she had been a wonderful cook, back in the days when some were. They have a slight amount of corn meal in the cake part, which gives them a simple, substantial, quaintly toothy quality. The frosting is not cloyingly sweet, but tastes very fresh and full of real flavorings and just enough butter to make them delicious without being sickeningly filling. I hate so much butter in the frostings that you get sick from it. I am a real cupcake fan, and found these wonderful. On the other hand, the cupcakes from the famed Magnolia Bakery in the West Village are too oily-buttery for my taste, too flakey-light, and fairly over-gooey with sugar.
