Cupcakes by Sonja in Manila just got a mention in Time magazine by IT manager and food blogger JJose Antonio Diaz. We've been hearing about them from bloggers and Flickr users. Here's one pretty extensive rundown. Our Awesome Planet calls them "the most mouth watering cupcakes I have ever seen in the Phillippines."

Owner Sonja Ocampo has the best credentials anyone can ask for; she’s a graduate of the Wilton School of Cake Decorating in Illinois, USA. She went on to study Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts at Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School, now known as the Institute of Culinary Education. She worked in Bouley (a four star restaurant) for 2 and a half years, and of course at the Magnolia Bakery, the shop that started all this craziness with cupcakes....

Ever tried a Valrhona chocolate cupcake topped with vanilla or chocolate butter cream? Or a moist, fresh, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting? Or how about a concord grape jelly-filled chocolate cupcake with creamy peanut butter frosting? Or a flourless chocolate cupcake? Or an upside down coconut cupcake with a milk chocolate center? What I really loved was her berries n’ cream - a brown butter almond cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream (real heavy cream) icing.

Our personal favorite? After taking a couple of pictures of these lovelies, A. and I had a hard time resisting the temptation to immediately tuck into "The Big Apple" Apple Pie. Newly baked with a warm, apple and cinammon aroma filling the air around us, can anyone restrain themselves from digging into this cup-size pie? Definitely not us.
