NYU's Cupcake Gang

Cupcake Two from Magnolia

Washington Square News has the scoop on NYU's Cupcake Gang. I wish I'd been part of something like this when I was in college!

This group is made up of four girls who operate under enticing pseudonyms - Parvathi Jithendranathan (Cappuccino Swirl), Jamie Li (Lemon Meringue), Alyson Gorun (Vanilla) and Shankar (Choco-Choco Chip).

The Cupcake Gang meets over cupcakes and shares their conversations and ratings with the rest of the world via their blog. Their website is full of anecdotes, helpful analysis and pictures and aims to help the cupcake-hungry masses make the best decision on where to purchase their sweet treats.

Inspired by a trip to Magnolia Bakery, this group vowed to taste-test cupcakes for the good of all NYU students. According to Cupcake Gang standards, the perfect cupcake is neither dry nor cakey, generous with the frosting and reasonable in price. So far they have evaluated Crumbs, Magnolia Bakery and Cupcake Cafe. The Whole Foods' cupcake review is coming soon.

Their blog is at thecupcakegang.wordpress.com and here are some of their thoughts, via Washington Square News:

On Crumbs:
"The yellow cake is silky-smooth like Akon's voice. But so silky-smooth that it CRUMBles. The icing was pretty dec[ent]."
- Choco-Choco Chip

On the Cupcake Cafe:
"This cupcake was mapley goodness. Cappuccino Swirl was satisfied."
- Cappuccino Swirl

On Magnolia Bakery:
"That frosting was on the heazy! I wish I could just slurble it. Choco and choco, yo? I likes the sound of that. The cake itself exploded, by the way. Because it was DYNO-MITE. But not actually."
- Choco-Choco Chip
