Selfridges to launch Sex and the City cupcake collection

From the Telegraph (UK) comes this news, via the article "This sexy little treat takes the cake." Who wants to bet the Sex and the City cupcakes will be pink? The end of the article has links to UK cupcake bakeries and a list of "cupcake royalty:" Nigella Lawson ("the cupcake's unofficial ambassador"), Downing Street, Stella McCartney ("pioneered the tiered cupcake wedding cake"), Gwyneth Paltrow, and Scarlett Johannson ("Makes a beeline for the Hummingbird Bakery when filming in London"). Also: is Magnolia Bakery finally going to get a real website up in time for the Sex and the City movie? It's long overdue!

Carrie and her friends get their iced treasures from the Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. This tiny bakery, which opened in 1996 and also featured in The Devil Wears Prada, is a New York institution, not to mention a tourist attraction.

On this side of the pond, Selfridges is launching a Sex and the City-themed cupcake collection to celebrate the film's release. Selfridges in Manchester and Birmingham and Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh and Manchester also sell them freshly baked.

London's cupcake bakeries have a loyal following. "I think of them as edible jewellery," says jewellery designer Bella de Winter. "They're a guilty pleasure, but only a small one. It's the perfect indulgence and makes me feel rich even when I'm broke."

Tarek Malouf, 34, owner of the Hummingbird Bakery, the closest thing London has to the Magnolia, says cupcakes are part of American family life: "Your mother or grandmother or aunt would bake them. But today no one has the time, so what you're really buying is the comfort of home baking. That was definitely what I felt as soon as I walked into the Magnolia Bakery: it was the smell of my childhood."
