Despite my smiling face above, I wasn't really in the mood for cupcakes on Tuesday. I had just eaten my way through Minneapolis, and actually turned down a coworker's homemade Irish Car Bomb cupcake offering (sorry!) in an effort to spend one day eating healthily. But then, after dinner, my friend and I were craving frozen yogurt. We were on Hudson Street and couldn't find any so stumbled into Southern Gourmet Pantry at 529 Hudson Street (212-337-0988). Well, they only had ice cream, but they did have gigantic $4 cupcakes.
I was heading to meet up with some friends so figured I'd buy us some cupcakes. Yes, they were pricey, but extra large and perfect for sharing. And they were delicious. The green one had lime frosting that was just tart and just sweet enough.

The snowball one, which I made my friend Twanna hold because it matched her dress, was my favorite. A bit smaller, with buttercream frosting and coconut, it hit the spot. All were great, though, moist and not too much frosting. I love stumbling upon a bakery that's not a cupcakery per se, but does have good cupcakes. I recommend them if you're in the neighborhood.

Well, I just wrote all this and then Googled them (whoops) and found via Gridskipper that their cupcakes come from Harlem's Make My Cake, which I also encourage you to check out. More bakeries should do this. Cupcakes on every block! Okay, maybe every other.
