Nichelle, Clare Crespo, and Rachel
I hope you guys aren't getting sick of my video posts, because I'm kindof addicted to them. This one is a very special one because if it weren't for this woman, this blog would not exist. Seriously.
Way back in the summer of 2004, I got a little advance promo for a book called Hey There, Cupcake! by Clare Crespo and became obsessed. Nichelle said to me today that Clare was ahead of her time and I think that's true. She's a cupcake pioneer, but she is also constantly reinventing both the cupcake and herself, with creative endeavors aplenty.
I interviewed her for Gothamist back in 2004 and she said:
I think cupcakes are perfect. They are for the individual. You never share a cupcake. They are so darn cute and because it's just for you, it makes you feel special. You can't overdo it with a cupcake either. A cupcake doesn't make you feel sick. Have you ever seen anyone pick out a cupcake? It takes a bunch of time. They have to pick the one that speaks to them. Cookies and donuts don't speak to you.
The thing about Clare is that her cupcake energy is infectious. At the Duncan Hines Cupcakes for a Cause luncheon, she showed us how to make spaghetti and meatballs with cupcakes and frosting, and hamburger cupcakes, but it was not the specific techniques so much as her enthusiasm and belief that cupcakes are, in a word, fun.
