Everything at Red Hook, Brooklyn bakery Baked is just so, from the decor to the design of their foods. I got to sample many treats from them, including these two cupcakes (red velvet on the left, vanilla frosting/chocolate cake on the right). I'll have a full interview (2, actually, one video, one text) up soon about their new book Baked: New Frontiers in Baking, but for now wanted to share this photo I took. Matt Lewis, the co-owner, sent me on my way with a goodie bag with several bars and these two cupcakes. As I walked to the bus, the top popped open and I looked down and saw them staring up at me and had to snap this.
And I'll say this: It's worth traveling all the way to Red Hook (or virtually all the way to their website, where some things are available by mail order). Their desserts are both unique and delicious. I'll have more photos soon (including, don't kill me, some non-cupcake ones, because who can resist handmade peppermint marshmallows?) and a full writeup, but I encourage you to check them out. I even plan to tackle their recipe for banana cupcakes with pastry cream this weekend; I'm not the biggest baker but it sounds delicious and might even be doable for a novice.
