I do investment sales at a very well-renowned financial institution in Canada, part time. Since I’ve completed university, I’ve decided to venture off and start my own small cupcake business and see where it will take me. You run a "virtual" cupcakery. What is that?

Currently, Petit Cupcakes does not have a retail location. So I call it a “virtual” cupcakery because ordering is done online. Customers can visit the Website to check out the menu and gallery photos and when they are ready to place their order, they will need to contact me via Internet to do so. All the cupcakes are made-to-order, so once their order is complete, I arrange for delivery or pick-up of the baked goods.

Wow! You make cupcakes with gold. Can you tell us a bit about that? What gave you the idea?

You must be talking about the “24K de la crème.This is our carrot cake with cream-cheese frosting, that is dusted with 24k gold leaf. It’s basically a play on words (carrot and karat) and I thought the name was kind of clever and I was still able to implement the French twist to it. I was just shopping for baking ingredients one day and came across silver and gold leaf, and I was very excited to see it, as I could envision how gorgeous it could make my cupcakes look. I personally think the 24K gold leaf just looks stunning on cupcakes and gives it that added elegance to it.

What is your best-selling cupcake?

My best-selling cupcake I think is a tie between the J’Adore Chocolat (Chocolate Cupcake with Chocolate Swiss Meringue Buttercream) and the Peanut Buttercup (Chocolate Cupcake with Peanut Butter Buttercream).

Do you ship cupcakes?

Unfortunately at this time we do not ship cupcakes! But that would be something very exciting for us to venture out in the future.

How often do you eat cupcakes?

I guess every time I have to bake them for someone I’ll take a bite of one! Because after all, I want to make sure it tastes good right?

What's the best thing about eating cupcakes?

It’s a cute, small treat that you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in! Small, but big on flavor.

What's your favorite type of cupcake?

That’s a difficult one for me…as I like a lot of them! I guess so far I really like Coconut Cupcakes. My favorite frosting would have to be Swiss Meringue Buttercream because it has a very light and silky texture, and it’s not too sugary-sweet.

How do cupcakes compare/contrast to other baked goods for you?

Cupcakes to me are so versatile. You can literally dream up a flavor or combination with a cupcake and run with it. For example, I’ve noticed a lot of bacon cupcakes on this blog over the past few weeks! You can’t exactly create a bacon cookie and have it look and tastes wonderful now can you? But somehow you can totally pull it off with a cupcake. That’s why I love them!

Is there any innovation you'd like to see made to the cupcake that would improve it for you?

Well I guess this kind of goes with a previous question asked. If there was a way to package and ship cupcakes (fully frosted and decorated, etc.) without them getting ruined and still retain their freshness that would be amazing. That is something that I guess I still have to figure out!

Do you bake your own cupcakes? Or (even better) have someone who bakes them for you?

For the business itself, it’s just me! So I always bake my own cupcakes. Although I have actually inspired a couple of friends to get into the kitchen and bake cupcakes as well, so every once in a while I’m the lucky one who gets to indulge in other people’s cupcakes.

What's your first cupcake-related memory?

Well, I’ve been baking cupcakes for a few years now. Although my first and best memory of something that was cupcake-related would have to be the time I met my boyfriend, Randall, which was more than two-and-a-half years ago. I was just starting out with experimenting with cupcakes by using fondant shapes to decorate the tops of them and fooling around with piping techniques. I had so many mini cupcakes that I made and decorated and with no one to give them to! So I decided to bring my experimental cupcakes into work and share them with my colleagues.

I approached a friend of mine (who was a mutual friend of mine and Randall’s) and asked him if he would like a cupcake. My friend actually turned me down and said no! He said he didn’t really like sweets, but then my friend says, “I’m sure this guy here wouldn’t mind a couple of your nice-looking cupcakes.” And that guy just happened to be Randall. My memory of Randall was him saying “Wow these are so tiny, they are bite-size.” And then I said to him, “You can take two if you want,” with a big smile on my face of course because I kind of already had a crush on him. Just thinking of that day still makes me laugh and smile...because that’s what broke the ice and that’s how we started talking to each other. I guess you could say that’s how I won over my boyfriend—through cupcakes Maybe it’s true what they say, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

What's the most fun you've ever had with a cupcake?

I think for me, the most fun I’ve ever had with cupcakes was when I was asked to donate 150 of them to a Community Fun Festival in London (Ontario) for a fundraising event. A friend of mine was organizing the entire event and requested some fun colorful cupcakes to sell to kids and parents who would be attending. I have a real soft spot for little kids…and for me, it was just the look on those children’s faces and watching them enjoy their first bite into a cupcake that just made me think to myself , “This is what it’s all about, putting smiles on people’s faces and just making them happy.” It’s extremely fun and delightful to see how such a small colorful cupcake could light up a small child’s face! It’s also funny to see them get icing all over their faces too. It was for a great cause, and I actually got to see people enjoying them first-hand.

Do you have anything else to add?

I have an absolute passion for cupcakes! I’m very excited to start this new venture in creating cupcakes for others to enjoy and just to make people happy. I want to thank all of my family and friends for being so supportive of me when I decided that I wanted to start my own little cupcake business. Without their encouragement and support, Petit Cupcakes wouldn’t even exist!
