Guest blogger: Sandy Ploy, Milwaukee Cupcake Queen of No One Puts Cupcake in a Corner

This one is from Sandy Ploy, aka the Milwaukee Cupcake Queen of the blog No One Puts Cupcake in the Corner (as with Jessie, I'm hoping to get out to Milwaukee in 2009 so she can give me the guided cupcake tour)

Also, from now on there will be one guest blog post a day. It was my fault for not getting Jessie's up in time.

1-800-Flowers Launch Party - Everything Cupcake
Hello to the readers of Cupcakes Take the Cake!
It is an honor to be guest blogging on the site that I often refer to as "the mothership" of the cupcake blog world. I was fortunate to get to meet Nichelle and Rachael earlier this year and now I get to meet more of their readers as well! I have been wracking my brain trying to decide what to talk about. How about a little about me and a lot more about those that inspire me.
  • How I spend my days longing for cupcakes in this Godforsaken land of the cupcakeless in Milwaukee? Here in Wisconsin, we are still without a noteworthy cupcake bakery. So sad. I did, however; just hear that my friends at Fratello's have received orders totaling 600 cupcakes - just for this week. Being that they are a fine-dining establishment which just happens to serve cupcakes, this is a big deal in these parts! They forsee the trend continuing through the holidays. So, hopefully, people will want their cupcakes and someone awesome will move in and do it right!
  • A lot of folks have asked why don't I open a shop myself??? Plain and simple, its the money. I know I would thrive as a cupcake entrepenuer! If a cupcake-angel were out there wondering if they should grant me a sugary-sweet wish, I would say take me away from it all and lets build the rockin-est cupcake shop in the midwest!
  • Some know that I work at a food magazine, Taste of Home, but many don't realize that I try not merge my cupcake life and my magazine life very often. In September though, I was able to work with Karen Tack and Alan Richardson to create our new cover for the December issue, which turned out simply gorgeous. One of my proudest career moments. This issue is on newsstands now. If you don't get Taste of Home and would like a free subscription, visit this link.
  • Ultimately, I felt that the best use of space would be to salute the other cupcakers out there that inspire me so much. I am sure you know most of these women, but a few of them might be new to you, and definitely worth a read if you haven't paid them a visit in a while. So, here they go, in no certain order:
FIELDS OF CAKE. I am convinced that Carrie and I were sisters-in-frosting in another life. Her creations are unique and inspired. Her flavors are adult and rich and lux. Back in May, she blogged about a Vanilla Cupcake soaked in Black Cherry Vodka Simple Syrup that blew my freaking mind! Take a look at it, don't you just want to stick your finger in that gorgeous sauce and take a taste?? I love that exotic twist that she bakes with...I get it, I respect it!

BLUE CUPCAKE. Julie of Blue Cupcake, is the most prolific and quite frankly one of my all-time favorite cupcakers. She does some of the most adorable fondant creations, including these Day of the Dead themed wedding cupcakes, with just a enough cute to make you want one, RIGHT NOW. She lives in the same part of California as my family, so I am hopeful that one of these days we will get to toast a cupcake together!
IC:Earth Prize - October 08 - Original Art from ETSY artist, ART ON THE MENU
ART ON THE MENU. I first noticed the Art on the Menu acrylic paintings while I was bopping around FLICKR (as usual). I thought the detail and the delicate color choices were nearly edible. When I got to Patianne's actual etsy page I had to gasp for air when I found the recycled cupcakes. I love "stuff" made out of other "stuff". Picture, if you will, innocent cardboard forced into bends, wads, pinches and other contortions to be converted from average cardboard into delicate little works of art, including cupcakes! Bravissimo! I am a fan for life!

CAKESPY! Well, of course I had to mention my friend Jessie. And I do mean friend. With the thanks of technology, blogs, flickr, et all, I have managed to hire Jessie for Taste of Home illustrations; meet her and show her around Milwaukee; and proudly say that she is one of the most talented people I have ever met. Her writing, her illustrations, her sense of humor...you get the idea.
JOHNNY CUPCAKES. While I do not know Johnny Earle myself, I do credit his creativity and blend of naughty and nice with a major portion of the responsibility for my foray into blogdom. Cheers Johnny!
One last thing, as the founder of IronCupcake:Milwaukee and IronCupcake:Earth and IronCupcake:Local, I would be remiss if I did not tell everyone that voting for the current round of IronCupcake:Earth is now open. If you have not checked out the over 50 cranberry creations, it is worth a taste. Cast your vote before Friday. If you would like to join, just send me your name, city, state and blog link.
