The latest cupcake lawsuit: More Cupcakes vs. Sugar Bliss Cupcake Boutique

We've posted about many a cupcake lawsuit on this blog in the interest of keeping you up to date, not because we'd rather hear about lawsuits than cupcake deliciousness, though I think it's important to pay attention, especially for budding bakery owners.

Here's the latest from Chicago Business:

There’s no sugar-coating what More Cupcakes thinks of its competition.

The Gold Coast bakery at 1 E. Delaware that made headlines last year with its bacon-lettuce-tomato cupcake (and other odd, savory flavors) says one of its bakers has gone to work for the competition—the newly opened Sugar Bliss Cupcake Boutique at 115 N. Wabash—in violation of a confidentiality agreement.

It has filed a lawsuit against Melanie Rodewald, the baker in question, in Cook County Circuit Court. More was also granted a temporary restraining order that prevents Ms. Rodewald from working at Sugar Bliss.

Among other things, the suit says Ms. Rodewald broke a signed agreement not to share her cupcake-baking knowledge with the competition.

“(Ms.) Rodewald’s actions were outrageous because of her evil motive or reckless indifference to More’s rights,” the court documents say.

I couldn’t reach Ms. Rodewald, who can’t work because of the restraining order, so I sent her a note by way of Facebook to see what she had to say. No word yet.

And Sugar Bliss owner Teresa Ging, who left a finance job to study at Le Cordon Bleu Patisserie program in Paris before opening her shop, refused to talk about the case.
