How many wedding cupcakes are enough?

Wedding Fair

Flickr user jennywenny asks in our Flickr discussion pool about how many cupcakes to serve at a wedding:

Its a fairly informal cocktail party with 80 guests. This will be the dessert. I would guess about 100? 1.25 per guest?

I'm probably going to make 3 or 4 different flavors

If you have some advice for her, chime in here or on Flickr. Thanks!

We had between 95 at our wedding and had 120 cupcakes available in two different flavors. Most people just ate one, but there were a few that wanted to try one of each (and one bridesmaid told me she ate three). My husband and I ended up with about 10 left over to enjoy later on. Hopefully that helps some.

We had 4 flavors at our wedding (1 vegan option) - 25 of each flavor. There were about 55 guests. We had less than 10 leftover to take home and those were promptly eaten by the guests that followed us home.

I think 100-120 is the perfect amount for 80 people, and guests can always take extras home.

At my friends wedding they too had a cupcake wedding cake and I think if you go with the general rule, 1.25 cupcakes per guest, that should work out to about the right number.

I had cupcakes at my wedding, with a dozen people and two dozen cupcakes. I ended up with 10 leftover cupcakes, which I split with a friend. Yes it was a small wedding, however some wanted more and some wanted less. I'd rather have leftovers than disappoint anyone, so I'd go for 1.5 cupcakes per guest, more if there are kids or hungry adults, and more if you are serving smaller portions of dinner / food. In the end I would talk to the baker--I'm sure they would be the expert on ratios of cupcakes to guests.

Depends on size and flavor(s). Can you make minis? If so, I would think 1 mini of each flavor per guest, assuming no other desserts and not a huge meal.

Cool question - we got married just over 3 weeks ago, and had incredible cupcakes (regular and mini, same flavor) and cookies with coffee for our very tiny (8 including us) reception. (chocolate cake with vanilla frosting)

One thing we noted in tasting ahead as we prepared to place our order - despite being identical in composition, I liked the larger ones better as the frosting was just spread on for a homemade look and it was piped onto the minis which changed it for me somehow in the "bite into it" feel. We got a dozen of each, and a couple dozen mini (large mini!) cookies - oatmeal and double chocolate. I think everyone at at least one mini, and some of the bigger ones (I had 2!) as well as some cookies. We enjoyed the leftovers during the rest of our stay, but you could send them off with folks in cute boxes.

Enjoy!

I can't speak for everybody, but I'd eat five or six if they look like that :)
You can't go wrong with 1.25 per head unless you didn't have enough hors doeuvres.
