I will post more about the Zilly Rosen cupcake art exhibit, but wanted to give my impression of Red Velvet Cupcakery (see my full photo set here). First, I liked that it was so near the National Portrait Gallery. The setup reminded me of Sprinkles Beverly Hills (the only Sprinkles I've been to) in terms of its setup and display; there were a few shiny red seats, then more seating at TangySweet next door. The cupcakes were $3.25 each and very pretty to look at; a few I think were worth the price, the rest weren't really my thing.
My favorites were the peanut butter (for the frosting) and the key lime (largely for the cake). I bought one each of 8 flavors, getting six in a box, eating the lemon/coconut there and getting a bag for the cookies n cream type one.
I found the chocolate cake very crumbly, and while the cookies n cream one had chocolate chips in it, it was slightly...baking soda-tasting. It just wasn't moist and yummy. It wasn't totally dry, it just didn't make me want to eat it, except as a complement to the frosting. The vanilla cake was okay, but not all that.
The vanilla frosting was excellent, though, with vanilla flecks visible and a very sweet buttercream, that is probably too sweet for most people. The peanut butter frosting was great because it wasn't too sweet; it was like peanut butter but thicker and a bit sweeter. The chocolate frosting was very thick and pudding-ish; good, though I wound up eating those today and it was like biting into thick pudding. Their box held up very well, all the way home to New York.
Lemon/coconut cupcake
I am not really a key lime person, but what won me over with that one was that the frosting was lighter than the others, and it was unusual, plus the cake was truly remarkable; an unusual flavor, very moist and tasty and something new. As for the namesake red velvet, well, I am not the greatest judge as cream cheese frosting isn't really my thing, but this one didn't do much for me. The frosting was very cream cheesey, so I just had a quick taste, and the red velvet cake, like the chocolate, was just so-so.
Red velvet cupcakes
I give them big points for presentation (the little gold detailing) and would try their cupcakes again, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to get them.
This total happened to be on the register when I went up, and it cracked me up! Clearly, it was an error (or someone was veeeeery hungry for cupcakes, but I know it was a mistake, though imagining that order made me laugh).
