We've been hearing and seeing a lot about cupcakes and the economy, and I've tended to say that cupcakes are thriving despite the doom and gloom elsewhere in the financial world, so I truly hope this is not some dire sign that cupcakes cannot thrive.
From Eater:
Pichet Ong writes in to confirm that yes, he is closing his West 10th Street ventures P'ong and Batch after service on Sunday. He explains, "Basically we couldn't get the rent down to a number we can work with in the current 'new economics' predicament." Luckily there is a small bit of good news. He plans on opening a new and bigger version of Batch in the coming months. Stay tuned for more.
And a reminder - Urban Foodies, a new project of Cupcake Kids!, takes place this Saturday (tomorrow) at Batch. It's $65 and looks like online they only have signups left for the 10:30-11:45 session for 9-14-year-olds.
Join us for our first Urban Foodies class as we visit notable pastry chef Pichet Ong's bakery, Batch, nominee for Best New Bakery by Time Out New York, and restaurant, P*ONG. Beginning with an insiders' tour of the downstairs kitchen at P*ONG, led by Pichet himself, we'll hear the secrets on how a real restaurant kitchen operates. Next, we'll head next door to the bakery for some hands-on activities as we learn how to make Pichets favorite cupcake.
Location: Batch Bakery, 150 W10th Street
