An edible book, in cupcakes: The Joy of Cooking

Congratulations to Short Street Cakes of West Ashville, North Carolina, who won the popular vote at the BookWorks Edible Book Festival!

I didn't even know such a thing existed; it was the first one, and here was what contestants were tasked with:

BookWorks is soliciting participants for the Edible Book Festival to create entries that are “bookish” – that is, they integrate text or literary inspiration and/or that are “book-like” in form. Each participant will receive two free tickets to the event and can take part in the Edible Book Festival’s competition.

From their blog on how they won:

This quote, from the foreword to the original 1931 edition of the Joy of Cooking, rendered in the form of 350 miniature cupcakes:
"This book is the result of a long practical experience, a lively curiosity and a real love for cookery. In it I have made an attempt to meet the needs of the average household, to make palatable dishes with simple means and to lift everyday cooking out of the commonplace." Irma S. Rombauer, The Joy of Cooking, 1931.

What continues to make cupcake blogging so fun are projects like these, which take cupcake creativity to a whole new place. It's a well-deserved victory!

The quote may be touching, but The Joy of Cooking is actually quite a poor resource for cupcakes! Although the book admits that almost any cake and filling/frosting/icing recipe it provides recipes for can be turned into cupcakes, the specific recipe it recommends for white cupcakes is incredibly silly. My version of Joy suggests using angel food cake for a white cupcakes. Anyone who has ever tried using angel food for CUPCAKES knows that preventing shrinkage post-baking is almost impossible. Of course, one can turn each paper upside down to cool, but even then you'll never get that lovely, classic cupcake shape with the cake just peeking above the paper.

The inspiration for the Joy of Cooking quote is not that I necessarily endorse their cupcake recipes (I actually use my own recipes!) but that her food philosophy mirrors my own. Cheers!
