I dropped the ball on letting you know about the Blue Cupcake and Lot 44 Coffee partnership in Los Angeles, but I also figured you Angelenos were smart and you are: over 400 people showed up yesterday for free cupcakes!

From their press release (my apologies for not getting this up before the opening):
Lot 44 Coffee in downtown Los Angeles announced today the grand opening July 20 with new partner Blue Cupcake in a venture that will create the first retail locale in the area to sell specialty cupcakes baked fresh daily...
Desmeules began baking cupcakes and building her business through her website, www.bluecupcake.com, about a year ago, after deciding to leave corporate life in marketing. She sells her luscious cupcakes at the weekly Century City farmers market, and started getting a following downtown when she used to sell her treats at the Pershing Square farmers market.
“I always loved the vibe of downtown,” said Desmeules, who is from Montreal. She had worked in downtown Montreal, and when she moved here, she said, it was natural to check out downtown L.A. “There is no other cupcake shop downtown. This will be the first.”
Desmeules bakes with seasonal, locally grown and natural ingredients. “I think it makes a real difference to use products from local growers,” she said. She also bakes custom orders, often whimsically decorated, or layered on towers for a unique wedding cake. She has won an award for her triple chocolate cupcakes — “for the real chocolate lovers,” she says.
From six to nine flavors of her moist, flavorful cupcakes will be served downtown each day, such as strawberry, chocolate, coconut and red velvet. And Desmeules developed a special flavor just for store customers — the Espresso Mocha cupcake using organic Lot 44 espresso.
Graham has developed her approach to coffee during 17 years in the business. She sees Lot 44 Coffee, which features exhibits by local artists, and the adjacent large atrium space in the Douglas Building as the perfect place to sit and enjoy a cup of premium coffee with a cupcake. At Lot 44, she says, “We can say to you, ‘This coffee goes best with this cupcake.’ It’s a natural marriage to me.”
Desmeules wrote on her blog:
The new Espresso Mocha cupcake, made of the organic espresso served at the coffee shop, quickly became a favorite along with the PB&J, raspberry velvet and strawberry cupcakes.
Here are some other examples of Blue Cupcake's custom cupcake work, see her site for ordering information:
airplane cupcakes
Einstein cupcakes! (previously blogged but too cute not to repeat)
